    Understanding Noise Exposure

Noise-induced hearing loss is cumulative and irreversible. The amount of damage depends on both the intensity (loudness) of the sound and the duration of exposure. This calculator helps you track your "noise dose" – the percentage of your safe daily exposure limit that you've used. To measure real-time sound levels, use our online decibel meter.

    Under 50%

Safe zone. Your current exposure is well within recommended limits.

    50-100%

Caution. Consider reducing exposure or using hearing protection.

    Over 100%

Daily limit exceeded. Take action to protect your hearing immediately.

    How It Works

    • The calculator uses the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit (REL) with a 3 dB exchange rate
    • At 85 dB, you can safely be exposed for 8 hours. For every 3 dB increase, the allowed time is halved
    • Your "dose" accumulates based on both loudness and duration – louder sounds use up your allowance faster
    • The dose resets each day, but hearing damage is permanent, so staying under 100% daily is crucial
